After an uneventful preseason and Week 1 of the Regular Season, the Rams’ first round draft pick began to pay dividends on Sunday.
The team went on the road to face the Atlanta Falcons in a hostile environment. The Falcons, led by Matt Ryan and an interception returned for a touchdown by Osi Umenyiora, found themselves ahead of the Rams 24-3 at halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Rams made some offensive and defensive adjustments that allowed them to climb back into the game. They scored on two posessions in the third quarter. The second of which went to Austin, a 7-yard touchdown pass from Sam Bradford. The first of Austin’s career.
Later in the fourth quarter, with the Rams down 31-17 and driving down the field on a tired Falcons’ defense, Austin caught a pass on an out route and rolled out of bounds. He stayed down and had to leave the game. Stedman Bailey replaced Austin for. Bradford threw an incomplete pass before Austin returned on the next play. He appeared to have had the wind knocked out of him.
A few plays later, Bradford threw a second touchdown pass to Austin as he dove parallel to the goal line.
However, it wouldn’t be enough as the Falcons prevailed 31-24. Austin finished the game with 6 receptions for 47 yards and 2 touchdowns to go along with 2 rushes for 8 yards.
