The NFL season is fully underway, now, with Week 1 out of the way. Every WVU Pro in football saw action this past week except for Jeff Braun with the Miami Dolphins and Joe Madsen with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Let’s check in with our WVU Pros and see how they fared.
Najee Goode led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensively with 6 tackles. One of those were for a loss. Goode is in the midst of working his way up the Buccs’ depth chart, and he had a very strong showing Thursday night.
Goode’s teammate, Keith Tandy, also had a good night. Tandy is making the transition from safety back to cornerback, playing in nickle situations for Tampa Bay. He finished with 4 tackles and a pass breakup. The Buccs lost to the Ravens, 44-16.
Adam “PacMan” Jones and the Bengals were featured on ESPN last Thursday night as they took on the Falcons. Jones only made one tackle and was flagged for pass interference. He didn’t return any punts or kicks on the night, either. The Bengals won 34-10.
Tavon Austin, the no. 8 pick overall, made his preseason debut with the Rams Thursday night, but didn’t see much action. Austin was targeted only once and the pass was incomplete.
Teammate Stedman Bailey, though, hauled in 2 passes for 27 yards and also made a tackle on the kickoff team. As a back end receiver, he’ll need to play special teams, also.
Across the field, Kent Richardson was on the defense for the Browns. He finished with 2 tackles as his Browns bested the Rams 27-19.
Pat White, who is making his comeback to the NFL, may have had the best night of any WVU pro this past week. He finished 5-8 passing for 31 yards and ran the ball 5 times for 33 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown. He then later completed the two-point-conversion to win the game for the Redskins, 22-21. He was named Offensive Preseason Week 1 MVP for the Redskins.
Chirs Neild finished the game with 1 tackle for the Redskins.
Across the field, Darius Reynaud had a decent night. He ran the ball 7 times for 3.0 yards and returned one kickoff for 24.0 yards.
JT Thomas finished with 1 tackle as his Bears lost 24-17 to the Panthers.
Geno Smith made his NFL debut with the Jets Friday. He went 6-7 for 47 yards. He ran the ball once and tweaked his ankle of the play.
Defensively, Ellis Lankster had 3 tackles and a pass breakup as the Jets lost 26-17.
Don Barclay took some snaps at RT for the Packers in their 17-0 loss.
Terence Garvin put together a nice game for the Steelers at inside linebacker. Garvin made 3 tackles and nearly had an interception on the night.
JD Woods, also with the Steelers, made two spectacular grabs totaling 21 yards. He also took a kickoff out of the endzone for 18 yards.
Will Johnson, also with the Steelers, made the first catch of the game. He finished with 2 catches for 18 yards.
Ryan Mundy led the way for the Giants defensively with 5 tackles.
Selvish Capers had his name called on TV for putting out a nice block. The Giants won 18-13.
Pat McAfee did what he does best Sunday against the Bills. The self-proclaimed “boomstick” drilled 7 punts for an average of 51.4 yards and landed three of them inside the 20 yardline. Unfortunately his Colts lost 44-20.
Jeff Braun has landed in Miami and said he should be suited up for the Dolphins next game. Joe Madsen just didn’t see the field for the Steelers.
Tune in later this week as we will tell you who will be in action for the second week of preseason.
