Much has transpired in the month between the start of NFL Training Camps and now. We've done our best to keep you up to date on all 23 Mountaineers who were on NFL rosters at the start of camp. All of the games this week will be played on Thursday evening. We'll have a full preview that morning.
For now, here is what we are hearing.
-- The quarterback situation for the New York Jets is a mess. The team has stacked the deck and given Geno Smith every chance to supplant Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback. Smith left the first preseason game against the Lions with an ankle injury, which kept him out of Week 2. He didn't have a chance to fully rest his sore ankle before his Week 3 start against the Giants. In that game, he threw 3 interceptions and ran out of the back of the endzone for a safety.
It looked like Smith wasn't quite ready, and Sanchez would get the nod to start in the regular season opener. Until, that is, Rex Ryan sent Sanchez back into the game during the fourth quarter, where he proceeded to suffer a shoulder injury. An MRI on Monday was inconclusive, and Sanchez has already been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Eagles.
ESPN's Rich Cimini reports that we shouldn't be surprised if Geno Smith sits out the game. With one QB already injured behind a questionable offensive line, the Jets may not want to take the risk of Smith suffering another injury.
-- It appears that Ryan Mundy will start at safety for the New York Giants with starter Stevie Brown going down with a season-ending ACL injury suffered last week against the Jets. Mundy is in his first season with the Giants after spending his first four with the Steelers.
-- Darius Reynaud will likely get the nod as the Titans' starting kick returner for the second year. Last season, he replaced previous starter Marc Mariani who suffered a broken leg during the preseason. He came back from the injury in a bid to take the job back from Reynaud. However, Mariani injured his shoulder in the first week of the preseason and has yet to return.
"We look at a lot of factors," Titans head coach Mike Munchak said, "but obviously (Reynaud) is the guy that can help us win football games right now.
-- Many have wondered why the Rams haven't featured Tavon Austin. The simple answer is: they don't want to... yet. Head coach Jeff Fisher explained on the Jim Rome Show:
"We have a pretty good idea but we havent shown it yet, Fisher said. Hes not had a lot of production in the preseason, only because it makes sense to hold those types of things for the regular season.
