Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins are injured. Rex Grossman is getting older and needs some rest. Pat White is that sports car that's been sitting in storage for a couple years waiting to be unleashed.
After three impressive performances in the Redskins' first three preseason games, head coach Mike Shanahan revealed that White will go the distance for the team on Thursday night against Tampa Bay.
Because the Redskins have three other quarterbacks on the roster, White's future with the team is uncertain. Through three games, he has played nearly four quarters of action. During that time, White has gone 15 for 28 passing for 159 yards and an INT. and has had 12 rushes for 83 yards and 1 TD.
The stats tell you part of the story. After three years of not playing football, White appears in command of the offense and is making the right decisions when running the zone-read, allowing his backs to tear off big chunks of yardage that has led to several scores.
There are a few scenarios here to keep in mind. Since White has played so well, few doubt at this point that he will not be on a roster somewhere at the start of the season. It may not be with the Redskins, who may elect to keep Rex Grossman on board to provide a veteran presence for their two second year quarterbacks.
Other NFL teams know this.
Ideally, what the Redskins would love to see happen is for White to continue his strong play on Thursday night and have other teams call with trade offers rather than allowing White to enter waivers for some other team to snatch up.
The game vs. the Bucs is slated for a 7:30 pm ET kickoff and is not currently picked up for a national broadcast. If you are in a market which will show the game, this will be Must See TV.
