After making headlines and turning doubters around, Geno Smith can now add something else to his resume after his impressive Monday Night Football debut. Wednesday he was awarded the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Smith, who led the Jets to a 30-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons Monday night, reverted back to his college days it seemed. He didn't throw for 600 yards and 5 touchdowns. But he did throw with accuracy and poise as he led the Jets down the field for a game-winning drive.
The rookie completed 16 of his 20 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns. He didn't have a single interception, something that has plagued him all season in the pros.
With the Jets trailing 28-27 with just under two minutes left, Smith kicked it into gear. On the drive, he completed four straight passes and ran the ball for an eight-yard gain to set up a Nick Folk game-winning field goal.
After the game, Smith said, "It's always been a dream of mine to be in those situations. My confidence is always sky-high. Nothing can bring me down."
Smith will look to improve as the Jets' starter moving forward, as Mark Sanchez just underwent season-ending shoulder surgery.
