Geno Smith and Ellis Lankster picked up their first loss against the Patriots, falling 13-10.
The New York Jets seemed to struggle somewhat in the first half, but showed glimmers of hope on several occasions.
Even after out-gaining the Patriots in terms of total yards, the Jets only trailed the Patriots 13-3 at the half.
Smith completed seven of 16 passes for 94 yards but his receivers didn't help him out much as theJets were plagued with a fumble and a plethora of dropped passes. He was also sacked three times in the first half, but he stood strong in the face of pressure several times. He also moved well outside of the pocket, picking up only one yard, but getting rid of the ball out of bounds when he needed to.
Lankster didn't make any plays but was on the field for punt coverage. His name was called during a play that some might have flagged for fair catch interference but the play wasn't even reviewed as the replays shown that he was pushed into the receiver and the two teams moved on.
As the rain began to pour at the beginning of the second half, the Jets took over.
Smith completed his first pass of the second half deep down the left side of the field to Clyde Gates for 34 yards and moving the ball into Patriot territory. But the drive would stall and the Jets would punt to start the second half.
The next drive for the Jets, Smith would engineer a drive with a first down with his legs followed by a first down strike to Santonio Holmes. A couple of plays later, the Jets would bang it in on the ground to pull within three. Smith would finish 3-3 for 34 yards and a 16-yard run on the drive.
In the beginning of the third quarter, with the Jets still trailing 13-10, Smith converted a nice third and long from his own twenty yard line to Holmes. Two plays later, Smith would air it out to Stephen Hill for 37 yards and another first down to move into Patriots territory once again but the drive would come to a screeching halt when Smith's pass was tipped and intercepted. The Jets were in field goal range but the ball changed possessions.
Smith would later throw his second pick of the day with just around four minutes left in the game.
The Jets would get one more chance in the game with just under a minute left on the clock with 71 yards in front of them, but Smith would throw his third and final interception of the game and bringing the game to an end with the Jets falling to the Pats 13-10.
Smith finished 15-of-35 for 214 yards with three interceptions. He also had three carries for 17 yards.
Lankster didn't record. any tackles on the night.
The Jets fall to 1-1 and will play next Sunday against the division-rival Buffalo Bills.
