As of this Saturday, we will be 7 days away from the start of Mountaineer football and their game against William & Mary. The team is in a full rebuilding mode after the losses of Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey and Geno Smith to the NFL Draft. The Mountaineer backfield will be stacked. The defense more experienced, and a new quarterback will be at the helm.
There are three certainties in life: Death, Taxes and Dana Holgorsen's explosive offense. The competition in the Big 12 will be fierce as we found out last season. It should be an exciting fall for Mountaineer fans wherever you are.
Before the Mountaineers kick off against William & Mary, we could get an early gift via the NFL Preseason. Geno Smith's injured ankle is healing nicely. According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Smith will get the start for the Jets on Saturday should he not suffer any setbacks during practice this week.
Traditionally, the third game of the preseason is a dress rehearsal for Week 1 of the regular season. Starters usually tend to play three quarters before the first big roster cutdowns early the next week. In Week 4, those starters don't play much, if at all.
The fact that Smith will start over Sanchez shows that the quarterback competition is very much alive, despite the fact that Smith did not play this past weekend. In the two starts for Sanchez, he hasn't done much to take a stranglehold on the competition. He threw an INT returned for a touchdown in Week 1 and threw another INT in the end zone this past weekend. The Jets have been very vocal in saying that turnovers will not be tolerated.
In the Steelers vs. Redskins game on Monday night, White played well during the fourth quarter. He led one scoring drive and threw an interception on another. He looked like the White of old running the read-option. His turnover came when his targeted receiver slipped and fell on the play. You can read a recap of the game here.
In that game, temporary starter Kirk Cousins left the game during the second quarter with a foot injury. The team says that he suffered a mid-foot sprain.Should he be unable to play, we could see Rex Grossman and Pat White split the snaps in the game.
Should that happen, it could be quite an afternoon of football for Mountaineer fans, a week early.
